What You Need to Know

Whether this is your first year or your twenty-second year attending the Virginia Festival of the Book, we’ve gathered some basic information below to help provide you with a warm welcome in 2016.

First, take a look at the schedule and list of participants to get a feel for which authors and programs interest you in the 2016 Festival. You may also search by topic.

As you’re exploring, be sure to keep track of the programs of interest by adding them to your online Book Bag. Since the vast majority of our programs are free, you won’t need to purchase tickets for most of them. (Ticketed programs will include details about how to purchase these online or in person. One venue, Culbreth Theatre, requires tickets for all programs, including those that are free.)

The Book Bag provides a simple way to keep track of the programs you plan to attend—and it’s a lot more organized than taking a marker to the printed schedule in March! To add a program to your Book Bag, just create an account (or log in, if you already have one) and then add your favorites to it by clicking on the Book Bag icon on each program page.

If you’re traveling to Charlottesville for the Festival, we recommend you check out our information on transportation to and within the city and surrounding area. We have also compiled useful information about local food and lodging options, including details about our group rate at the Omni Hotel Charlottesville.

If you already live in the area, it wouldn’t hurt to clear your schedule as much as possible during the Festival so that you can take advantage of all that the schedule has to offer!

Once you’ve made your plans, tell your friends and share your excitement for the Festival on social media. You can find the Virginia Festival of the Book on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and we encourage you to use #VaBook2016 in your posts.

The Festival kicks off on Wednesday, March 16 and will go full-steam through Sunday, March 20. During the Festival, your days and nights will be filled with readings and discussions, book signings, film screenings, performances, and more! Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time when traveling between venues.

Finally, some parting words of advice that we’re heard over the years:

  • Say hello to that author whose work you admire, and be sure to let them know just how much you loved their most recent book.
  • Take time to talk with the other people you see at Festival programs. Who can predict what will come from the shared love of a particular book?
  • Buy books and get them signed by the author—trust us, you’ll cherish these for years to come.
  • Most importantly, plan to have a fantastic time. That’s what we do!
